Concrete floors are very durable, low-maintenance surfaces. But, sometimes they become worn and rugged looking over time. Often stains and scuff marks appear on concrete floors for all the world to see, and let’s face it, even newly poured concrete floors are rather bland and not much to look at.
Worst of all is when you apply an inferior product over sealed concrete to try to improve the appearance, only to find that your coating is chipping and flaking in short order, but not bad enough to easily remove it. So, you’re left with a patchy mess that was even worse than when you started.
So, what’s the solution? Epoxy floor coating systems. Epoxy floor coating systems are two part products that chemical bond and harden once mixed together, making them many times stronger than traditional oil or latex coatings. These coatings can be applied in solid colors or with a variety of vinyl chips or quartz crystals to produce some rather amazing designs.
The key to long-lasting epoxy floor systems is three-fold. First, you must select a quality product. Many two component systems that are purchased at DIY big box stores are of inferior quality, and they only offer limited options for preparations (acid washing is most prevalent). Second, you must mechanically profile your floors in some manner. At Painter Ready, we use a Blastrac Diamond grinder coupled with a specially designed vacuum system to capture concrete dust produced by the diamond grinding process. Even the best epoxy floor coating will fail if the proper preparation is not performed.
Lastly, you need experienced installers. Applying epoxy floors takes experience and product knowledge. Also, making sure that the painting contractor you employ has the appropriate training for the manufacturer to stand behind the product is crucial.
Flooring systems of all types have the highest rate of failure of any painted surfaces, and even expertly installed epoxy systems can run into minor issues. However, starting with an experienced painting contractor can mitigate these risks and set you up to have the best possible finished product and experience.
